Where to Stay in Malta: The Best Areas Compared
Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian's, St. Paul's Bay, Mellieħa or Gozo? An honest guide from a local host

Stay in Valletta for history and atmosphere, Sliema for shopping and the ferry to the capital, and St. Julian's for nightlife. For a relaxed beach holiday with good value and easy access to the sandy north, St. Paul's Bay (Bugibba and Qawra) or Mellieħa are the best choices, and they are especially good for families and groups. Choose Gozo for peace and countryside.
Malta is small: you can drive from one end of the main island to the other in about an hour. That makes the choice of base less critical than in bigger destinations, but it still shapes your holiday. Traffic can be heavy, the sandy beaches are concentrated in the north, and the cities in the centre are busy and more expensive. Here is how the main areas compare.
Malta's main areas at a glance
| Area | Best for | Beaches | Price level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valletta | Culture, couples, short city breaks | None in the city; lidos and rocks nearby | High |
| Sliema | Shopping, promenade walks, ferry to Valletta | Rocky shore and lidos | High |
| St. Julian's | Nightlife, restaurants, young groups | Small sandy beach at St George's Bay | Medium to high |
| St. Paul's Bay (Bugibba, Qawra) | Families, groups, value, car-free travel in the north | Small sandy Perched Beach, rocks and lidos; long sandy beaches a short ride away | Medium |
| Mellieħa | Sandy beach holidays, families with a car | Mellieħa Bay, Malta's largest sandy beach | Medium |
| Gozo | Peace, nature, diving, slower pace | Ramla Bay and rocky coves | Medium |
Valletta: for history lovers
The capital is a UNESCO World Heritage city of honey-coloured streets, baroque churches and harbour views. Staying here means St. John's Co-Cathedral, the Upper Barrakka Gardens and dozens of restaurants on your doorstep, and the city is lovely in the evening once the day visitors leave. The trade-offs: accommodation is expensive and often in converted townhouses with stairs, there is no beach, and parking is very limited. It is ideal for two or three nights; for a longer holiday many visitors combine it with a base by the sea. See our must-see attractions in Malta.
Sliema and St. Julian's: city by the sea
Sliema has a long seafront promenade, shopping streets and a ferry across the harbour to Valletta in a few minutes. Neighbouring St. Julian's adds Spinola Bay, many restaurants and Paceville, Malta's nightlife district. Both are convenient and lively, but they are densely built, traffic is heavy, and prices are among the highest on the island. Light sleepers should avoid the streets around Paceville.
St. Paul's Bay: the relaxed north
St. Paul's Bay, which includes Bugibba, Qawra and Xemxija, is the most popular base in the north. It has a long promenade, plenty of restaurants and supermarkets, the National Aquarium, and the Bugibba bus terminus with direct routes to Valletta, Sliema, Mdina, the sandy beaches of Golden Bay and Mellieħa, and the Ċirkewwa ferry to Gozo and Comino. Accommodation is generally better value than in Sliema, and there is a good choice of apartments and maisonettes for families and groups. Read our detailed guide: Where to Stay in St. Paul's Bay.
Mellieħa and the north-west
Mellieħa is a hilltop town above Mellieħa Bay (Għadira), Malta's largest sandy beach with shallow water that is perfect for children. Popeye Village and the Ċirkewwa ferry are close by. It is quieter than St. Paul's Bay and the town is steep, so it works best if you have a car. Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa, further west, have a few hotels and beautiful sunsets but little else within walking distance. Our guide to the best beaches in Malta covers them all.
Gozo: the slow island
Malta's sister island is greener, quieter and more rural, with farmhouses for rent, excellent diving and the citadel of Victoria. The ferry from Ċirkewwa takes about 25 minutes. Gozo is wonderful for a week of peace, but day trips to Valletta and the rest of Malta take time, so many visitors prefer to stay on the main island and visit Gozo for a day.
How to choose
- First visit, mix of sights and sea: St. Paul's Bay or Sliema, with day trips to Valletta, Mdina and Gozo.
- Family holiday: St. Paul's Bay or Mellieħa, close to shallow sandy beaches and with more space for your budget. See the best area in Malta for families.
- Group of friends, four to six people: a two-bedroom apartment or maisonette in St. Paul's Bay usually offers the best value.
- No car: Valletta, Sliema or Bugibba, the three main bus and ferry hubs. Read how to get around Malta without a car.
- Nightlife: St. Julian's.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Malta for the first time?
For a first visit, St. Paul's Bay (Bugibba) and Sliema are the most practical bases: both have many restaurants and shops and direct buses or ferries to Valletta and the main sights. Sliema is more urban and expensive; St. Paul's Bay is more relaxed, better value and closer to the sandy beaches in the north.
Is it better to stay in the north or south of Malta?
Most visitors stay in the north or centre. The north (St. Paul's Bay, Mellieħa) has the sandy beaches and the ferry to Gozo and Comino; the centre (Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian's) has the city sights and nightlife. The south is quieter and good for fishing villages like Marsaxlokk, but it is further from the beaches.
Is Bugibba better than Sliema?
It depends on your trip. Bugibba is calmer, cheaper and closer to sandy beaches, which suits families, groups and beach holidays. Sliema is better for shopping, city atmosphere and the quick ferry to Valletta.
Where should I stay in Malta without a car?
Stay near a bus or ferry hub: Valletta, Sliema or Bugibba. Bugibba's bus terminus serves the north of the island, including Golden Bay, Mellieħa and the Gozo ferry, while Sliema and Valletta are connected by a short ferry.
How many days do you need in Malta?
Five to seven days is enough to see Valletta, Mdina, the Blue Lagoon and Gozo and still have beach days. With one fixed base you can reach almost everything as a day trip.
